Stone specification in Saudi Arabia fails in ways it does not fail elsewhere, and the failures are predictable. Surfaces too hot to walk on. Joints that open after two summers. Colour that has drifted from the sample. Surfaces sandblasted dull by wind-borne grit.
None of these are the stone’s fault. They are specification decisions made using assumptions from a temperate climate. Here is what the Kingdom’s conditions actually demand.
A dark stone surface in direct sun in Riyadh in July gets extraordinarily hot. Not uncomfortable — genuinely unusable barefoot, and hot enough that thermal movement becomes a structural consideration rather than a footnote.
Colour is the dominant variable. Light stone reflects; dark stone absorbs. The difference between a cream granite terrace and a black granite terrace under the same sun is not marginal.
The rule for the Kingdom: light-coloured stone for any unshaded horizontal surface. Terraces, plazas, pool surrounds, walkways, courtyards. Dark stone belongs on vertical surfaces, in shade, or indoors.
This is the single most common specification failure in Gulf projects and it is entirely avoidable at design stage.
Large temperature swings — between day and night, and between air-conditioned interiors and exterior conditions — drive expansion and contraction in both the stone and the substrate.
Consequences to design for:
Movement joints are not optional. Large paved areas need them at appropriate intervals. Continuous rigid paving without movement provision will crack or lift at the weakest point.
Adhesive selection matters. Use a system rated for the temperature range and the substrate, not a general-purpose product.
Thresholds are the vulnerable point. Where an air-conditioned interior meets an exterior terrace, the temperature differential across a short distance is severe. Detail these transitions deliberately.
Mechanical fixing for facades. Above ground level, cladding should be mechanically fixed rather than relying on adhesive alone. This is standard good practice everywhere and non-negotiable in this climate.
Wind-borne sand acts as a continuous abrasive on exposed surfaces. Over years it dulls polished finishes and softens sharp edges.
The implication: a polished finish outdoors will not stay polished. In exposed locations it will progressively dull, and it will dull unevenly depending on prevailing wind exposure, which looks worse than uniform weathering.
Specify textured finishes for exterior use — flamed, brushed, sandblasted, natural cleft. These have no gloss to lose, so abrasion changes them far less. They also provide slip resistance, which polished surfaces do not.
Natural mineral colour in stone is generally stable. What is not stable is applied colour.
Colour-enhanced stone — treated to deepen or even out tone — can fade under sustained UV, revealing the underlying colour it was applied to hide. In Saudi UV conditions this happens faster than in temperate climates.
For any exterior application in the Kingdom, ask directly whether material has been colour-enhanced, and get the answer in writing. Resin filling of micro-fissures is a different matter and generally fine.
Some resins used in slab reinforcement can also yellow under prolonged UV. For exterior work, minimally treated material is the safer specification.
Unshaded terraces, plazas and walkways Light-coloured granite in a flamed or brushed finish. Kashmir White and Colonial White are the reliable choices — low absorption, high hardness, and light enough to stay walkable. Sandstone such as Rippon Buff or Kandla Grey in a natural or calibrated finish also performs, staying notably cooler than dark stone.
Pool surrounds Light granite in a flamed or brushed finish, or calibrated sandstone with a riven face. Requirements: low porosity against chlorinated and salt water, light colour for surface temperature, texture for wet slip resistance. Avoid polished anything.
Facade cladding Granite or slate, mechanically fixed. Both are dense and UV-stable. Darker colours are acceptable here because vertical surfaces are not walked on and receive less direct perpendicular sun for most of the day — though south and west elevations still see substantial thermal load.
Interior flooring Marble comes into its own inside. Makrana White, Morwad White and Katni Beige all perform well in air-conditioned interiors. Polished for prestige areas, honed for wet areas and circulation.
Feature and prestige work Rainforest Green, Panda White, Fantasy Brown, Imperial Red — all suitable for interiors and for shaded or vertical exterior applications where the display matters more than the wear.
For exterior use in this climate, water absorption is the technical figure worth requesting.
Lower absorption means less water and dissolved salt entering the pore structure. In coastal areas — Jeddah, Dammam, Khobar — salt crystallisation within porous stone causes surface spalling over years. Denser, lower-absorption stone resists it substantially better.
Granite typically sits well below 0.5%. Dense limestones such as Kota and Tandur sit under 1%. Sandstone varies considerably by variety, which is why you should request figures for the specific variety rather than for sandstone in general.
Transit from Nhava Sheva or Kandla to Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port at Dammam runs 10 to 14 days. Processing 15 to 25 working days. Minimum order 20 metric tonnes, approximately one 20ft container.
HS codes: marble 2515.12, granite 2516.11, sandstone 2506.10, limestone 2521.00, slate 6803.00, quartzite 2506.20. SABER conformity applies — plan the certification in parallel with processing, not after it.\

Light-coloured granite in a flamed or brushed finish, or calibrated sandstone. Light stone stays substantially cooler underfoot than dark stone, and textured finishes provide slip resistance and resist sand abrasion.
Dark surfaces absorb far more solar radiation and become too hot to walk on barefoot in summer. They also experience greater thermal movement, which stresses joints and adhesive beds.
Not as polished. Wind-borne sand progressively dulls the gloss, and unevenly, depending on exposure. Specify flamed, brushed, sandblasted or natural finishes for exterior use.
Natural mineral colour is generally stable. Applied colour enhancement can fade under sustained UV, revealing the underlying tone. Confirm treatment status in writing for any exterior material.
For exterior use, the lower the better. Granite typically sits well below 0.5%; dense limestones under 1%. Sandstone varies by variety — request figures for the specific stone rather than a general range.
