The Most Popular Indian Sandstone Colours for UK & European GaOf all the granite varieties exported from India, none has achieved the global recognition of Black Galaxy. Walk into a stone showroom in London, visit a kitchen retailer in Sydney, or browse a stone importer’s catalogue in New York, and Black Galaxy granite is almost certain to be prominently featured. It is India’s most internationally celebrated granite — and arguably one of the most recognisable natural stones in the world.
Yet despite its fame, many buyers — including experienced stone professionals — have questions about Black Galaxy: Where exactly does it come from? Why do some samples look different from others? What separates genuine Black Galaxy from imitations? And how do you ensure you are getting the real thing?
At Nirvan Exports, we have supplied Black Galaxy granite to buyers in over 40 countries since 2006. Here is everything you genuinely need to know before you buy.
Black Galaxy granite is a specific Indian granite variety characterised by a deep jet-black background covered with brilliant golden-bronze mineral speckles called bronzite. These speckles — which range from fine pinpoints to larger flecks — catch light and create a dramatic star-field effect across the polished surface. In direct light, the speckles appear to glow. In natural light, they shift and sparkle as you move around them.
Geologically, Black Galaxy is an ultramafic rock (a chromite-bearing serpentinite, technically) rather than a true granite in the strictest geological sense. However, it has been commercially marketed and sold as granite for decades and is universally classified as granite in the stone trade. What matters commercially is its performance: it is harder than most true granites, has extremely low water absorption, and polishes to one of the most intensely lustrous surfaces of any natural stone.
This is perhaps the most important fact about Black Galaxy that many buyers do not know: genuine Black Galaxy granite is quarried exclusively in one specific area — Ongole district (also known as Prakasam district) in Andhra Pradesh, India. The unique mineralogy that creates the gold-bronze bronzite speckle effect is found nowhere else on earth.
Any stone being sold as ‘Black Galaxy’ that does not originate from Ongole, Andhra Pradesh is not authentic Black Galaxy. Several imitation stones — particularly from China and other Indian regions — have been marketed under similar names. Genuine Black Galaxy from Nirvan Exports is sourced directly from Ongole quarries, with provenance documentation available upon request.
Not all Black Galaxy granite is the same. The stone is commercially graded based on the density and distribution of the golden speckles, the uniformity of the black background, and the absence of fissures or mineral inclusions.
Dense, evenly distributed golden speckles. Uniform jet-black background with minimal variation. No visible fissures or discolouration. Used for high-end kitchen countertops, feature walls, and luxury hospitality applications.
Moderate speckle distribution. Minor colour variation in the black background is acceptable. Occasional minor fissures (which are naturally occurring and structurally sound when properly sealed). Suitable for commercial flooring, external cladding, and large-format tile applications.
An ultra-premium sub-variety with extremely dense, fine speckle distribution giving an intense star-field effect. Rare and significantly more expensive than standard Black Galaxy. Reserved for the most prestigious countertop and feature wall applications.
Black Galaxy is one of the world’s most popular kitchen countertop stones. Its deep black background provides a dramatic contrast with light cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and white or cream colour schemes. Specify at 20mm (standard) or 30mm (premium) thickness in polished finish. Black Galaxy has very low water absorption, making it highly stain-resistant and practical for kitchen environments.
Black Galaxy bathroom vanity tops, floor tiles, and wall cladding create a luxurious, spa-like aesthetic. In polished format, the reflective surface maximises light in bathroom environments. In honed or leather finish, it provides a sophisticated matte alternative.
Black Galaxy in 60×60cm or 60×30cm polished tiles creates premium commercial flooring with visual impact. It is widely specified for hotel lobbies, upscale retail spaces, corporate reception areas, and airport terminals globally.
In flamed finish, Black Galaxy’s very low water absorption and frost resistance make it suitable for exterior facade cladding in most climates. The flamed surface reduces the visual intensity of the gold speckles but retains the dramatic black aesthetic.

Genuine Black Galaxy granite is exclusively from Ongole district, Andhra Pradesh, India. There are no authentic deposits of this stone outside India. When buying, always request provenance documentation or ask your supplier to confirm the specific quarry origin.
Natural variation in the density and size of golden bronzite speckles is inherent in Black Galaxy granite — no two slabs are identical. The black background can also vary slightly from blue-black to warm-black depending on the specific quarry section. For large projects requiring consistent appearance, we recommend reviewing actual slab photos from the specific batch before ordering.
Black Galaxy has very low water absorption (typically 0.1–0.2%) and is naturally resistant to staining. However, we recommend applying a penetrating impregnator sealer annually for kitchen countertop use as a precautionary measure. For flooring applications, sealing is advisable particularly in commercial environments.
FOB pricing for Black Galaxy granite varies based on grade, slab size, and market conditions. As a rough guide, polished gangsaw slabs in commercial grade typically range from USD 30–60 per square metre FOB India. Select/premium grade commands a premium above this range. Yes. Black Galaxy’s very low water absorption (0.1–0.2%) makes it highly frost-resistant, and it performs well in cold climates including Northern Europe, Canada, and Northern USA. For outdoor paving in cold climates, flamed or brushed finish is recommended for improved slip resistance.
