Indian sandstone is well established in the UK and Australian landscape markets and comparatively underused in the United States, where the default hardscape materials remain concrete pavers and domestic bluestone. For US landscape contractors and stone yards willing to import, the cost and appearance advantages are substantial.
There are also two things that trip up American buyers specifically: metric sizing and freeze-thaw. Both are manageable. Neither is obvious if you have only ever bought domestically.
Indian sandstone is produced to metric dimensions. The common paving sizes are 600×600, 600×290, 290×290 and 890×600 mm, usually supplied as a mixed project pack designed to lay in a random bond without cutting.
Converted, 600 mm is a little under 24 inches. That is close to a 2 ft module but not identical, which matters when you are setting out against existing imperial hardscape or a house footprint dimensioned in feet.
Two approaches work. Either design to the metric module and accept the setting-out, or order cut-to-size in imperial dimensions. Cut-to-size costs more per square foot and takes longer to process, but for a project that has to align with existing work it is worth it. Specify it at order stage rather than trying to solve it on site.
Calibrated material is machined on the underside to a consistent thickness, typically 22 mm with a tolerance of around ±2 mm. Uncalibrated material varies, sometimes considerably.
For a US crew accustomed to the dimensional consistency of concrete pavers, uncalibrated natural stone is a shock. Every slab has to be individually bedded to level. On a large patio that is days of extra labour.
At US labour rates, the calibration premium pays for itself several times over. Specify calibrated, confirm the tolerance in writing on the purchase order, and check it on arrival by measuring slabs from several different pallets.
This is the question every northern US buyer asks and it deserves a straight answer.
Sandstone is more porous than granite. Water enters the pore structure, freezes, expands and, over enough cycles, causes surface delamination and spalling. In climates with hard repeated freeze-thaw cycling, this is a real mechanism.
What determines performance is porosity, and it varies between Indian sandstone varieties. Denser, lower-absorption varieties perform substantially better than open, more porous ones. Ask your supplier for water absorption test data for the specific variety you are considering, and treat a supplier who cannot produce it with caution.
What matters at least as much is installation. Sandstone laid on a full mortar bed over a properly drained compacted base performs far better than sandstone laid on sand over poor drainage. Most freeze-thaw failures in the field are drainage failures that get blamed on the stone.
For hard-winter regions — the upper Midwest, New England, mountain states — specify a low-absorption variety, insist on test data, and get the base detail right. In the South, Southwest and coastal California, freeze-thaw is not a design constraint at all.
Kandla Grey — cool mid-grey, the highest-volume Indian paving export. Weathers toward silver-grey. The closest visual analogue to domestic bluestone at a considerably lower landed cost, which is the pitch that lands with most US buyers.
Rippon Buff — warm honey-buff. Works with brick and warm-toned architecture. A strong alternative where grey reads as too cold.
Autumn Brown — warm brown with russet variation. Popular for naturalistic garden schemes.
Raj Green — green-grey with brown and rust banding. High natural variation, which suits informal and cottage-style planting.
Agra Red — deep red sandstone. Distinctive, best used deliberately rather than as a general-purpose paving.
Minimum order is 20 metric tonnes, approximately one 20ft container. In 22 mm calibrated sandstone that covers a usefully large area — enough for several residential patios, which is why US stone yards typically import in full containers and hold stock rather than buying per project.
Run the arithmetic against your local alternative properly. Compare landed cost per square foot — material plus freight plus duty plus port handling plus inland trucking — against your delivered price for domestic bluestone or premium concrete pavers. On most East Coast and Gulf Coast routes, imported Indian sandstone comes out well ahead. Also factor the installation saving from calibrated material against uncalibrated domestic flagging.
Sea transit from Nhava Sheva or Kandla to US ports typically runs 21 to 30 days. East Coast ports — New York/New Jersey, Savannah — generally clear faster than West Coast. Houston serves the Gulf and much of Texas well. Long Beach and Los Angeles serve the West Coast but carry the longest transit.
Processing runs 15 to 25 working days from order confirmation. Total realistic planning figure: eight to ten weeks from confirmed order to material at your yard.
For a seasonal landscape business that means spring stock is a winter ordering decision. Placing an order in March for an April season does not work, and the yards that run out in May are almost always the ones that ordered in March.
Sandstone ships under HS code 2506.10. Standard documentation: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin. ISF 10+2 filing is required for US imports and must be submitted within the required window before loading — your customs broker handles this, but the data has to come from the shipping documents, so accurate paperwork upstream matters.
All timber — pallets and crates — must carry ISPM15 heat-treatment marking.
