India is the world’s largest exporter of granite by volume and one of the largest by value. With active quarries across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Telangana, India produces over 200 commercially available granite varieties spanning virtually every colour in the natural stone spectrum — from jet-black Absolute Black to vivid Blue Dunes, from warm Tan Brown to the iconic gold-speckled Black Galaxy.
If you are sourcing granite for kitchen countertops, commercial flooring, exterior facade cladding, or monumental construction, Indian granite almost certainly offers the variety, quality, and price point you need. The challenge is navigating a market with hundreds of options. This guide draws on our 18 years of quarry-direct granite export experience to help you make the right choices.
Three factors make Indian granite the global benchmark: geological diversity, quarrying scale, and price. India’s granite-bearing regions contain some of the world’s oldest and most varied granitic formations, producing stones with mineralogy unavailable elsewhere. The Black Galaxy granite from Ongole, Andhra Pradesh — with its unique bronzite mineral speckles that create a gold-star-on-black effect — is quarried nowhere else on earth. Kashmir White, with its distinctive burgundy-red feldspar clusters, is another global icon found exclusively in Tamil Nadu.
The scale of India’s granite industry creates competitive pricing that no other major producer can match. Combined with improving quality control and polishing standards — Indian granite finishing has improved dramatically over the past two decades — Indian granite now legitimately competes with Brazilian, Norwegian, and Chinese granite at every price point.
Tamil Nadu produces the largest volume and widest range of Indian granite varieties. Key varieties include Kashmir White (white with burgundy clusters), Alaska White, Absolute Black (from Bangalore-Karnataka border), Colonial White, Baltic Brown, Tropical Brown, Ivory Brown, Moon White, and dozens more. Tamil Nadu granite is characterised by consistent geological quality and large block sizes suitable for monumental applications.
Andhra Pradesh’s greatest contribution to global granite is Black Galaxy — quarried exclusively in Ongole district and featuring brilliant gold-bronze mineral speckles on a jet-black background that has made it one of the most recognisable natural stones in the world. AP also produces Steel Grey (uniform grey, Prakasam district), Vizag Blue (steel blue, Visakhapatnam area), Tan Brown (one of India’s top exported brown granites), Kuppam Green, and Ruby Red.
Karnataka is the primary source of India’s premium black granites — particularly Absolute Black (true jet-black with no visible speckles, from Bangalore district) and Black Pearl (black with pearlescent mineral speckles). Karnataka also produces French Green (Hassan Green), Forest Black (with green veining), and Apple Green. Absolute Black from Karnataka is the global benchmark black stone and the most consistently in-demand Indian granite in premium markets.
Rajasthan contributes distinctive coloured varieties to the Indian granite range — including Desert Brown, Desert Gold, Chima Pink, Rosy Pink, Crystal Yellow, Blue Dunes, and Tiger Skin. These varieties offer warm, earthy tones that complement Rajasthan’s architectural heritage and are popular in Middle Eastern and Gulf markets.
Granite is the most widely used natural stone for kitchen countertops globally, valued for its exceptional scratch resistance, heat resistance, and low porosity. For kitchen applications, we recommend polished or honed granite at 20mm or 30mm thickness. Popular choices: Kashmir White, Alaska White, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown, Baltic Brown, Absolute Black, Steel Grey.
Granite’s superior hardness (Mohs scale 6–7, higher than marble at 3–4) makes it ideal for high-traffic commercial environments where marble would rapidly show wear. Standard format is 60×60cm or 60×30cm calibrated tiles at 16–20mm thickness in polished or honed finish. Popular choices: Steel Grey, Colonial White, Tan Brown, Absolute Black.
Granite’s very low water absorption (typically 0.1–0.3%), frost resistance, and UV stability make it ideal for exterior applications. For exterior paving, flamed finish provides slip resistance while maintaining natural appearance. For facade cladding, 20mm polished or honed slabs are standard.
India has a long history of supplying granite for cemetery monuments, memorial stones, and architectural monuments globally. Absolute Black, Imperial Red, Ruby Red, and dark grey varieties are the most commonly specified for monumental work.
A Nirvan Exports supplies five categories of natural stone: marble, granite, sandstone, slate, and limestone. Our marble range includes over 20 varieties such as Makrana White, Rainforest Green, Katni Beige, Fantasy Brown, and Spider Green. Our granite range includes Black Galaxy, Absolute Black, Colonial White, and 15+ additional varieties. We also supply Rajasthan sandstone in Buff, Pink, Teak, and Kandla Grey; natural slate tiles and slate veneer sheets; and limestone including Kota Stone, Fossil, Yellow, and Beige varieties.
For kitchen countertops, we recommend granites with very low water absorption and consistent colour. Kashmir White, Alaska White, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, and Steel Grey are the most popular Indian granites for kitchen applications globally. For white kitchen aesthetics, Kashmir White and Alaska White are the clear front-runners.
Granite hardness is relatively consistent across varieties (Mohs 6–7), but density and compressive strength vary. Absolute Black granite from Karnataka is particularly dense and hard. For high-wear applications, any well-quarried Indian granite is significantly harder and more durable than marble or limestone.
Indian granite is generally more competitive in price than Brazilian granite for equivalent quality, particularly for black, white, and grey varieties. Brazilian granite has an edge in certain exotic varieties (Blue Bahia, Van Gogh, Peacock) not found in India. For the most widely used granite colours, India offers better value.
The standard minimum order from Nirvan Exports is 20 metric tonnes — approximately one 20ft container, which holds around 200–250 square metres of 20mm polished granite slabs or 800–1,000 square metres of 16mm tiles. We can accommodate smaller trial orders for new buyers.
Transit time from Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) to Los Angeles is 21–24 days and to New York (Newark) is 24–28 days by sea freight. Customs clearance in the USA typically adds 3–7 business days.
